A beautiful American drama

This is the first Robert Redford film I've seen. Right now, it's the ONLY Redford film I've seen. And because this is such a good film, I can tell how talented Redford is.
A River Runs Through It has a lot to do with fishing. This is the story of Norman(Craig Sheffer from TV's "One Tree Hill") and Paul(Brad Pitt), two brothers who live in Montana during the 20's and 30's. Norman and Paul learn a lot over the years from their minister father(Tom Skerritt) who house-schooled them during their childhood. He teaches them a lot about God and about fishing, which they do quite often. As the years go by, Norman and Paul begin to lean on each other and as brothers, they become friends. Norman goes to college for a while, and when he returns to Montana he falls in love with a girl named Jessie Burns.
Paul, however, isn't so lucky. While Norman is offered a job as a literature teacher, Paul enters the world of gambling. This is a world in which Paul is addicted to, and soon it's too late for him to find his way out, leading him to self-destruction.
Bob Healy of Satellite News Network claimed that A River Runs Through It is destined to become a classic. I wish that this quote was valid because sadly, A River Runs Through It will probably not be a remembered film. You see, when someone brings up the idea of the films that Robert Redford directed, A River Runs Through It would probably not come up instantly. People would probably think of the film that he won his Academy Award for: Ordinary People. This film features great acting from Craig Sheffer, Brad Pitt, and Tom Skerritt. If you like dramas that are feel-good, you'll be caught by A River Runs Through It. |
