The Dracula film adaptation by Francis Ford Coppola is by far the best yet. As the original 1931 version shines for originality, Bram Stoker's is beautifully composed in all means possible. This film contains some of the most amazing set designs and costumes I have ever seen in film. Coppola's version is newly revamped with passionate eroticism and portrays a dramatic love story between Dracula and Mina. This was my highlight. The two lovers express their love for one another in a somewhat melodramatic yet totally believable fashion. The absinthe trance has to be one of the best scenes in the film and one of the best portrayals of the infamous drink. One of the most redeeming qualities of the film are its special effects. Using old methods and optical illusion the outcome is far better than any computer generated imagery. The film also expresses a unique style of theatrical decor. The film was shot completely on sound stages giving set designers full control and what they produced was just fantastic.
As for the actors, there is no better prince of darkness than Gary Oldman, he is impeccable. Keanu Reeves as Jonathan was an interesting casting decision but I think he did alright. Winona Ryder is simply luminous as Mina. Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing was very good. And lastly Tom Waits plays the best Renfield imaginable. On another note I congratulate Monica Belucci for her seductive role as one of Dracula's brides in what could possibly one of the most amazing sex scenes ever witnessed (in film).
So much more can be said about this cinematic masterpiece. But on the conclusive note, see "Bram Stoker's Dracula". |
