I found flirting to be well thought out and full of genuine emotion. The first love romance between the hero and heroine is beautifully realistic. It is a splendid example of two youths staying true to themselves as they bridge over into becoming adults. The sub-theme of the African tribulations during the time juxtaposes the beauty of love with the pain and loss of war. While there is very little of the real world being experienced at their respective boarding schools, they are experiencing a very true taste of the human experience. They often speak of the world changing events occuring beyond the walls of their microcosim and "Bird" as he is nicknamed comes to view Africa through the eyes of his beautiful Ugandan girlfriend. He disposes his former ideas of a mysterious fantasy world full of canibals as portrayed in the Brittish comic books of his childhood, and begins to see the beauty and strength of Africa and its people. |
