A complete gem of a film

Its beauty is the sheer simplicity of its story and how it unfolds on screen.
This " coming of age " story may have been done before in modern day " teen " films, but not in such a beautiful, sincere and real way. No sappy endings, intermittent love songs to illustrate a point or situation or any unrealistic dialogue.
Set in rural Australia in 1965 a teenage boy, the geeky Danny Embling falls for african student Thandiwe and what follows is their story of how they become kindred spirits.
With a narration provided by Embling, the film is a truly wonderful piece of film-making that worthily gained much critical praise on its release, winning a total of three Australian film awards, including that for Best Picture.
Starring Noah Taylor, Thandie Newton ( making her theatrical debut ) and Nicole Kidman in a small but scene-stealing part as head-girl Nicola Radcliffe ( her scene in which she relates her most personal experiences to Thandiwe is superb!) |
