This film had the unfortunate timing to come out after the powerful BoyZ N' the Hood. It's a good, thoughtful attempt at creating a passionate story about a father and son living in crime and drug ridden South Central L.A. But BoyZ did it better and was more intense.A year later came the superior to all, Menace II Society - a super intense urban drama/crime film. That film was the most effective in showing the urban hell of coming up in the violent Watts District. This is an ussuming little drama about a man who changes his evil ways and attempts to reconnect with his son who has fallen in with the criminal element. The mother's a heroin addict and the father feels guilt for having not been a part of his son's life becuase he was in prison.Ironically, while locked up he changes his ways.Is it too late to rescue his son from a life of crime and murder?
The acting in this film is for the most part good but it lacks intensity and emotional impact. Why? I can't say. It just does. Not a bad film, per say it just feels incomplete with a pat, abrupt ending that feels too contrived. I'm sorry to say that this entry is nothing special. |
