When I first saw this movie ten or eleven years ago I was struck by the originality of the material. It was the first and possibly only movie (as far as I know) that has ever been made where the special effects were used completely for comedic purposes. I absolutely loved it and fully expected it to be a huge hit. When it faded relatively quickly, I was surprised and disappointed. I never forgot it.
Goldie Hawn is, of course, an accomplished comedienne and lived up to her reputation, yet I am not at all surprised to see Meryl Streep -- that genious of an actress -- give her a good run for her money. Meryl's meanness was delicious to watch. Bruce Willis had the difficult job of the straight man to this duo of bitchiness, and he pulled off the job masterfully.
I had always believed this movie just took a nose dive after a few weeks of exposure. So I'm pleased to learn that it has something of a cult following. It is well-deserved. |
