Housesitter, like Groundhog Day and When Harry Met Sally, is one of those few comedies made in the past 15 years that is comically inventive, avoids cliches and exudes an original charm all of its own. The pairing of Steve Martin (this time an uptight architect who builds a house as a wedding gift for a woman who immediately rejects him as a loser) and Goldie Hawn, as a compulsive but brilliant liar who eventually wins the house and Martin works well. The many smaller parts are well cast and the screenplay is delightful. Direction keeps things moving along. This is a seriously underrated movie, well worth owning and watching several times. |
