I thought March of the Penguins was incredible and had no idea what those penguins go through just to survive and breed. It was incredible.
That said though, I wish I had waited a little longer and read some of these reviews before taking a 4 and 6 year old with me. The 4-year-old could not take the slower pace, narration and documentary style. I'm not sure what I expected the movie to be like... but I thought it was a more lighthearted look at the penguins that was appropriate for young kids. The 6-year-old asked questions throughout the entire movie, especially about the ones that were obviously dying... and it's tough to explain those things in the middle of a packed theatre... so not to bother the other moviegoers. It was a tough one and I wish I'd seen it on my own. [Especially because I had to take both to the bathroom at separate times and missed parts that were important to understanding the journey of the penguins.] I honestly feel a little ticked off that it is being promoted as "the perfect family movie." It's perfect only if you want a lot of upset young kids who cry because some of the penguins don't make it. Adults and older kids can understand that... but I didn't even know to prepare my little ones, and that makes me mad at the advertisers.
I would NEVER give this movie anything other than an A+ because it was educational, inspiring, and I thought it was incredibly well made. What a difficult task. A+ for me!! |
