Alec Baldwin only played Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October. So, why did they switch to Harrison Ford? Maybe because Alec Baldwin is just no Jack Ryan. Maybe he isn't exactly an action star. Harrison Ford seems to be more of a Jack Ryan, and he's in a lot of action films. He was only in two of the films because now that he's 62, he was too old to play Ryan in The Sum of All Fears. But however good Ben Affleck played Jack Ryan in that film, I don't think he was as good as Ford. Ford was Ryan in this film, Patriot Games, and he was also him in Clear and Present Danger, which I just rented and I'm going to watch it after I'm finished writing this review.
Patriot Games seems to have a simple story for a Tom Clancy film. Harrison Ford plays Jack Ryan who-if you don't know who he is- is a former CIA analyst. When the Royal Family is attacked by a group of terrorists. Ryan rushes in the fray and saves a member of the family, Lord Holmes, but kills a terrorist in the process. That terrorist was the brother of a terrorist who was captured(Sean Bean) and he is so mad about the death of his brother that he wants to kill Ryan. Eventually, his comrades rescue him from jail, and they go off to find Ryan. Ryan then realizes that his family is no longer safe and his heroic acts have come to betray him, and he will have to find out who the terrorists are and try everything to stay alive.
I have never read any Tom Clancy books because they are long and because they invlove political matters, I wouldn't understand them. But when you watch the movies you seem to understand them better. You also discover how great they are. Right now, I've only seen The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games, but I'm about to see Clear and Present Danger and I'd like to see The Sum of All Fears. I do belive that Harrison Ford was destined to play Jack Ryan. While he doesn't exactly have his greatness in his acting, he has perfect greatness in his energy.
P.S. Patriot Games has a beautiful score by James Horner. Do you have the VHS version of Forrest Gump? If you've seen the trailer for Braveheart on that video, the Irish music you hear at the beggining of it is not from Braveheart. It's actually from Patriot Games. |
