Last night I saw this movie for the 15th time I think. I like to keep the tape close to my VCR and enjoy it time to time like u do the visit of an old friend.
This is a film about Jim. It had to be named "The Doors" to make the connection with the band but actually it's only Jim. From the movie poster (Kilmer with his hair made out of fire) u can tell what this movie is all about. I am a Doors fan and I know that this band's greatness also comes from the special blend of musicians this guys were, but I also think that any other member of the band would have been replaceble except Jim.
Stone does a great job with this movie. The mixing of the scenes in - what seems to be at first - chaotic way only to make sense in the end is one of the best features of this film.
I read Manzarek's comments about the fact that this movie is focusing only on Morrison's dark side and that he had his "happy guy" moments. I dont think that songs like "The End", "When the music's over", "Strange Days" etc. were written in one of those moments. If the dark side was predominant in Morrison's personality that that's what the movie shoul show. Isn;t there a strong dark side in every Doors fan? Who listens to Doors for songs like "Easy ride" ?
So, in my opinion thats a movie for everyone to see, Doors fan or not. Who knows what u'll discover about yourself. |
