Harryhausen's Neglected Gem

The Valley of Gwangi was a flop when first released in 1969. After the huge success of One Million Years BC, you would think dinosaur films were hot stuff, but the new head of Warner Brothers at the time didn't like the film, and refused to promote it. Gwangi was not discovered until it appeared on the Late Show in 1973, where it gained some popularity and was repeated frequently.
I think it has some of Ray Harryhausen's best work. Cowboys roping an allosaurus. Gwangi fighting with an elephant, and with a another horned dinosaur. Stop motion at it's most realistic. Readily available on DVD. |
