The Maltese Casablanca
by SeamusM (movies profile)
Aug 6, 2006
Movie is a bit of a cross between two classics featuring many of the same actors: The Maltese Falcon and Casblanca. Like the latter, Bogey plays an American (named Rick!) of possibly questionable character trying to thwart Axis intrigue in an exotic foreign setting immediately prior to American entry into WW2. Like the former, Sidney Greenstreet plays mysterious protagonist with a ready flunky doing whatever he needs to obtain his objective while Mary Astor plays a woman whose side no one can be sure of. The dialog is the same quick, clipped, ready stream of both films. From a slow start, the film builds to an exciting climax as Bogey tries to prevent the destruction of the Panama Canal by saboteurs. As noted, the title is odd as no one even reaches the Pacific. This was certainly a propaganda film depicting the Japanese as scheming, goggle-eyed b@stards. Good stuff. Check it out! |
