Mixed but entertaining bag.

Two of John Woo's other films "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled" were definetly different, but had one thing in common. That was the quality, and quantity, of the action. The shootouts in both make the shooting in most movies look boring. In this, there is less action total than the first ten minutes of Hard Boiled. It still looks good, but theres less of it. This is more mellow dramatic. It is also less compeling than The Killer. We dont care as much when a charactor gets killed as we did in the two other films. With this, I noticed some similarities with Woo's work. Birds, boats, choirs, churches, and few other things. In this, Chow tries to escape on a boat, in Hard Boiled a charactor lives on a boat and in Face/Off there is a spectacular boat chase. In this, there is a scene where there are children singing, the female lead in The Killer is a singer, andin Face/Off Nicholas Cage grabs the ass of choir girl. There is a scene in this where a flock of birds flys off the water, In the final shootout of The Killer birds are flying, in the first shootout of Hard Boiled, there are guns in birdcages, and in Face/Off birds fly around the church in a shootout near the end. And finaly, churches. I know for sure that shootouts in churches occur in Face/Off and The Killer, and there may have been a church in this. A little sleepy, but a lot of fun. *** |
