much better than the reviews
by unconvinced (movies profile)

Maybe it's because the movie makes sardonic cracks early about the New York Times (for its support of Castro), or on the other hand maybe it's because the rebels are more sympathetic than the Bautista supporters (and that didn't play well in Miami), but movie reviewers never gave this movie the respect it deserves. Politics, seemingly, got in the way from both sides. BUT: it's a great story, great acting, and a good description of Havana on the eve of revolution.
Redford and Olin sizzle in a way that you don't often see in movies any more, and the action scenes are not just explosions for the sake of blowing something up for special effects, they actually make sense in the story.
The movie, like any other good semi-historical period piece, will make more sense to the viewer who knows the history of the Cuban revolution, but others can still watch it and get a good movie experience from it. |
