A sad story of a dying town
by Greg Linsun (movies profile)
May 19, 2009
The Last Picture Show tells the story of a sleepy town that's on the slow descent to a ghost town. For Sonny, the only form of entertainment the came from his hometown is the movie theatre. He's falling apart with his football career (while his best friend is a star), his relationship with his girlfriend is dying, and just overall is never catching a break. When the sheriff of the town suddenly dies out of illness, the town suddenly begins to go downhill. The Last Picture Show is an interesting town study but its major problem is that it doesn't utilize the picture show as well as it should. In fact, in the several months that take place in the film, the main characters only actually go to the picture show 2-3 times. However, in comparison to the impressive acting and unapologetic look at some of the dark secrets that are inside every town, that is an incredibly minor nitpick. Well worth a look. |
