Good concept, the rest...not so much

PACIFIC HEIGHTS is one of the most below average movies ever made. It's about a creepy tenant who won't move out of his apartment for an unclear reason, much to the dismay of the landlords. It sounds like a good concept but it is just terribly executed. With the exception of Michael Keaton, the casting and subsequent acting are terrible. Matthew Modine has to be one of the dullest actors around with a dumb face and dumb acting. If the budgets and scheduling were right, I think Tom Hanks would've been good in the role. Melanie Griffith is worse as his wife/landlord associate. I never liked her very much, like a dumber Marilyn Monroe-and that's not a compliment. Michael Keaton's character is not even that good. He's creepy from the beginning, who would let him rent the house? There's no suspense. I liked the concept but it's carried out so poorly. There are subpar camera directions and lighting that actually make it more predictable. The last ten minutes were actually very exciting and thrilling, if only it were the whole movie. |
