The Wizard of Elvis
by SOULMAN (movies profile) Jan 24, 2009
Wild at Heart directed by David Lynch is based on a novel of the same name penned by Barry Gifford. This film is basically a homage to The Wizard of Oz and Elvis Presley. You may actually want to see The Wizard of Oz again before watching Wild at Heart in order to catch all the references to The Wizard of Oz. This straight analogy to The Wizard of Oz actually makes this a rather easy to follow film for a David Lynch film. I am not sure whether Lynch is using The Wizard of Oz and Elvis Presley references to make some statement or whether it is done merely for comedic and entertainment purposes. It seems like it is done more for the latter. There seems to be a more comedic or satirical component to Wild at Heart than I have seen in Lynch's other films.

At some level there is something fundamental missing from Wild at Heart that exists in Lynch's other films. I cannot easily describe what this missing element is but there is definitely a degree to which Wild at Heart is simply too conventional for a film from David Lynch. This is truly the first film that I have seen directed by David Lynch that I was bored by. I truly liked both Blue Velvet and Lost Highway but Wild at Heart simply didn't retain my interest.
