Pretentious direction, overacting by Laura Dern and Diane Ladd, a terrible Elvis Presly imitation by Nick Cage, and a story that is, simultaneously, fascinating and boring, combine to make a film that should be missed at all costs. The recurrent themes from the Wizard of Oz are merely window dressing to disguise the fact that the story structure is poor. There are very occasional whiffs of genius here and there, but too few to make the tedium of the film worthwhile. |
