Joan Crawford may never have been better than spoiled socialite Helen Wright and John Garfield is outstanding as the violinist she falls for but can't have.
The film isn't a cheap sappy melodrama but rather a beautifully realized look at two different people, one with money the other without and their ambitions, dreams and ultimate downfalls.
The music is beautiful and perfectly compliments the film (John Garfield although isn't playing the violin however he would fool you he was).
Every role down to the smallest is brilliantly cast and the production is brilliant in capturing both upper and lower class worlds.
Joan's finest hour comes with her final scene on the beach, a haunting conclusion to a classic film.
Why neither of these outstanding stars didn't recieve Oscar nominations is beyond me. |
