They won't be showing this movie in any military recruiting commercials anytime soon.
A French general has an advancement dangled in front of him and decides to send his company on a suicide mission to overtake a hill.
Problem is, the area is being shelled heavily and machine gunfire makes the assignment very unpopular.
Kirk Douglas upon receiving the order voices his disapproval of the mission but after being threatened w/ reassignment, decides to lead the charge.
The mission turns out to be a disaster and several men who rightfully fear for their lives refuse to attempt the hill.
The crooked general, infuriated at the soldiers lack of willingness to die, orders the French artillery site to bomb their own troops trench.
When the artillery site refuses without a signed authorization from the general, the plot is set.
The general, still bitter he doesn't get his way, decides to court-martial the troops with the penalty being death by firing squad.
Kubrick really did a good job in inspiring hate for him. I was hoping one of the other officers or troops would cap his ass, but that's not the story.
The rest shows military politics at work and reveals the absolute evil and lack of remorse for human life in favor of greed.
An engaging movie and I'm sure people thought it really rocked when it came out in 57.
An excellent effort for one of his first times out, Kubrick gets a big thumbs up. |
