19th Century Florida--Tough Place
by Blue S (movies profile)
Aug 3, 2008
Excellent performance by the child Claude Jarman. This was a sobering look at man v. nature before there was air conditioning, refrigerators, and civilization. This story centers around a family in the Florida scruff in 1878. The family experiences heartbreak after heartbreak, after losing children and devastating tropical storms. The storm scene, after living through hurricanes here in FL, must have been extremely difficult for homesteaders and thier crops.
It was amazing to see florida in 1946 with so many trees--absolutely amazing, and in technicolor. But I really gave this high ratings for the child performer. He was really good. It is crazy too to see the 11 year old boy toiling away in the scruff building a fence wihout having shoes on, with a very plain Jane Wyman helping. The mother character in this film was so cold and embittered--I didn't even recognize that it was she until I saw her name in the credits. |
