Outstanding film version of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's Pulitzer Prize-winning story. Former silent screen director Clarence Brown gets the most out of the three lead actors (Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman and especially the young Claude Jarman, Jr.) in this story of a backwoods family's struggles in post-Civil War Florida. WARNING: You'll need a BIG box of tissues for this one. Men and women alike will be fighting back the tears as the 11-year old boy Jody Baxter (played by Jarman) and his adopted fawn's relationship come to a tragic end (as well as the boy's youthful innocence). This beautifully shot film won the Best Cinematography OSCAR in 1946. |
