Crisp, fresh dialogue and top-notch acting keeps this movie from feeling dated, even though it is now nearly a quarter of a century old. Linda Hunt (as photographer, Billy Kwan) is sublime; his character is so utterly fascinating and transfixing and both filled with pathos and wonder all at once that you actually forget that she is playing a man. Mel Gibson also shines in this one; Sigourney Weaver, in my opinion, is miscast, but she manages to do a terrific job anyway. We're in 1965 Indonesia here, during politial upheavel and tremendous poverty that nobody seems to notice or even care about...except Billy Kawn, who becomes a martyr for the cause near the end of the picture. See this film if you enjoy compelling cinema! |
