The Wiz, the soul version of The Wizard of Oz, features some of the most outstanding music, visuals and acting of any movie musical. The greatest drawback in the casting was Richard Pryor as The Wiz, whose lack of singing talents results in the elimination of one of the best musical sequences from the stage musical (So You Wanted to Meet the Wizard.) On the other hand, the incusion of a Quincy Jones number written specifically for the movie (Brand New Day) SHOULD have become one of the muscial standards from the movies. Michael Jackson does his finest work here, not yet handicapped by the eccentricities that plague his current fame, and the casting of Lena Horne as Glenda is inspired. |
