Most quotable movie ever...

The lighting is very poor at times. The story is practically non existent. There's no hollywood flash of explosions or high speed car chases and it took me near 3-4 viewings before I understood all the dialogue being spoken but despite all this, Withnail and I is in my personal top 5 movies of all time. It's a deceptive film on many levels I think because even though it's so very funny, it doesn't spoon feed the humor to you. There's no sense that the characters are setting up their dialogue to deliver a joke like many films do and at the same time there seems to be a new quote or line that sticks in your head in nearly every scene. Alot of it seems to come from the characters' circmstances and the actors' delivery of the well written material. The comedy is bleak, natural and sophisticated. Lowbrow humor with highbrow trimming.
The style and feel of the film may not bowl you over at first. Perhaps it's like Napoleon Dynamite in that way except the humor in "Withnail..." is a step above. When you begin to get this movie and it's tenor, it pulls you in deep and makes you laugh truly in amazement at how sophisticated and cleverly written it is. As much as I laughed watching this film over and over and as much as I appreciated the clever dialogue, the ending is surprisingly touching. It could have easily come across as pretentious to end the movie with a Shakespeare monologue but it works and fits the film's mood. It leaves the viewer wondering about the future for the characters in a similar way as when you watch the ending of "The Graduate". A true original and a great movie. |
