West Side Story is one of the best movie ever made and deserved its placing in the top 50 of the AFI's top 100 film of cinematic history. The acting is wonderful but what spoiled it from being perfect is the fact that all the actor's in this movie with the exception of oscar winners Rita Moreno and George Chakiris were dubbed. The visuals and cinematography for this movie during its time was state-of-the-art and absolutely brilliant. This is Leonard Bernstein's career defining work(though he had not wished it to be) and shows why he is one of the top three greatest american composers of all time. However, the brighest part of this movie is the incredibly job that Rita Moreno did with Anita. She lit up the screen everytime she was in it and took total and compete control over the "America" number. Her oscar was well deserved. Even viewers who do not enjoy Romeo and Juliet will surely enjoy this version of it, because it is modern and the musical numbers are excellent. Those who have not seen it should be rushing for the nearby movie rental store to see this movie. |
