This is the benchmark for Science Fiction "aliens attack the Earth" movies. This 1950's version of "War of the Worlds" easily trumps any later movies in this sub-genre of Science Fiction. The only Science Fiction that comes close to this benchmark is the TV mini-series "V", "V: The Final Battle" and "V: the TV series. In the "V" mini-series and series, the aliens disguise themselve and pose as friends only attacking after the human race is off-Guard. In this movie, the aliens land in "metorites". After guards are posted, the "meteorites" unscrew and the guards are killed by the death ray of the craft. After the use of a nuclear bomb fails, the human race is certainly doomed to extinction. Faithful to the novel, the aliens begin to die after breathing our atmosphere and are killed by microbes which Human Beings have long since developed immunity. |
