Even with gaffs with special effects (such as the sherriff's car exploding before it crashed, and Buford's club suddenly turning into a rubber band when brought down over a bad guy's back), mediocre acting from some of the characters (Grady especially), the story line itself was good, and easily believed, considering the reputation of organized crime entities. They picked the right actor for Buford Pusser, with Joe Don Baker. Big, strong, and comes off as a character just as hard, and solid as the club he carried.
However, considering the real Buford Pusser's track record, the character in the movie was whitewashed a bit too much, like previous Hollywood movies about lawmen. The adaption was too loose from the real character. Even heroes have their weak moments, but then, it may have taken away of the overall effect that the movie was going for with audiences. |
