When I rented Treasure of the Sierra Madre I wasn't sure what I was in for other than a typical strong acting performance from Bogart. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Bogart's character was very human with many flaws - somewhat of a departure from his roles in "The Maltese Falcon" and "Casablanca."

With a running time of 124 minutes this movie has a very deliberate pace, allowing the viewing audience to appreciate the character introductions and setting. What I really enjoy about movies made in the first half of the 20th century - this movie is no different - is that there's a tremendous amount of time and dedication appropriated to dialogue and character/story development. It's rare that you are treated with the same moviemaking criteria in 2004 - good or bad.

The Best Supporting Oscar went to Walter Huston for his portrayal of Howard, the old man with much experience in the arena of life and it's struggles. I was, however, quite impressed with the small bit part of the lone prospector, portrayed by Bruce Bennett. His character didn't last long unfortunately, but it was memorable all the same, partly due to the cool, calm and collected demeanor he projected.

In closing, this is the tale of hope, friendship, and greed between 3 gold prospectors trying to make their fortune. What makes this movie enjoyable to watch is the great acting and dialogue within. If you are looking to rent a movie that allows the leading characters to shine by virtue of a great screenplay, this movie is for you.
