Solid work by Bogart and the Hustons

I can't really name anything bad about The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, but I can't really name anything special that would make it qualify for one of the top 10 movies of all time.
Bogart's acting is great as usual. We spend much of the movie thinking he is the good guy, but in the end, his greed takes over. He even says that conscience can drive you nuts. This movie shows the thin line between success and flat out avarice. Each man got enough gold to last them a lifetime, but Bogart is so greedy, and the fiasco he gets into results in the loss of all the gold.
The movie's power lies in the ending. Bogart gets justice served, although ironically he is killed not for his gold, but for his boots, his furs, and his donkeys. Holt and Huston take the loss of their gold very gracefully. What else can they do? All they can do is laugh at all the opportunity that went down the drain.
Back to Bogart, his greed is established early. He begs repeatedly from one person, and wins the lottery when he didn't even want the ticket in the first place. He already is lucky, but he tries to push his luck too far. That is why he ultimately falls.
John Huston shot this movie excellently. As the film noir era was starting to phase out, the transition to outdoor scenery was difficult, but Huston captured the grandness and emptiness of the Sierra Madre. |
