Humphrey Bogart and Walter Huston play the roles of Dobbs and Curtin to perfection, and John Huston's direction is spectacular. The basic idea of the story is how someone who is down and out gets something of value (in this case gold), and wants more and more until it finally costs them more than what it's worth. The structure of the story has been used countless times, notably in Oliver Stone's Scarface.
Everything about this movie is great, and it comes in just a hair over 2 hours, making it very watchable. I would say this is possibly Bogart's finest performance I have seen, including Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon.
The Special Edition DVD also contains a second disc filled with interesting features about John Huston, Audio Commentary, Images, Bogart Trailers, a Radio Show, a Cartoon following the same structure, etc etc etc. Lots of stuff! |
