Classic Bond, but no Goldfinger

Following what has become the definitive James Bond movie, Goldfinger, was a tough act to follow. Since the producers had constantly tried to top the preivous Bond, Thunderball was going to be the biggest of them all. Although it still has classic Bond moments (the jetpack, Largo w/the eyepatch) it's sheer size and length makes it somewhat tedious. Connery, by this time, had mastered the character of Bond and there's more action for him than ever before. But that may be the problem with Thunderball - there's almost too much action for the size of the stoy. Thunderball is an entertaining entry in the series, but it just doesn't reach the heights of the great Bond flicks. |
