Slow beginning but it picks up right away

I really felt good after I finished watching this movie. There wasn't the sappy "everything works out in the end" feeling we have seen in too many films.
There also was not any closure and in this case I feel this is the way it had to be.
My only gripes with the film are in the very beginning where the Norwegians are chasing the Husky dog in a helicopter. The guy with the rifle could not even come close to hitting the dog even though it was right in his sights.
He also missed by a mile with a grenade. Why was that? Was he fatigued? A horrible shot? Possessed by the alien?
No explanation was given and that left me scratching my head.
Anyhoo, as the movie goes on, the Americans learn right away that the dog was carrying the alien inside and that it can assimilate to human form.
The paranoia that ensues from there made the movie particularly interesting. There were some very original gore kill scenes (the doctor with the defribillator brought a smile) and the alien looked different in several scenes which made the movie that much more intense.
The movie isn't that scary but does keep you guessing what will happen next. I really like the fact that Carpenter does not have a lot of cheap shock fright "guy jumps out of nowhere" scenes employed by so many other horror flicks.
The alien was not indestuctible and could be killed under the right circumstances. It is similar to Alien in this respect but I like it better because it did not get made into a series like Alien did.
A very good film and the best I've seen from John Carpenter, much better than his Halloween series.
