One of the few real scary gore films

There have been so many gore films that haven't really been scary, but this movie is one of those films that works both ways. Released in 1982, this film didn't have a lot of success at the box office because of the overwhelming gore which people back then were appalled by. However, if you look passed the gore you will see a truly terrifying experience. This movie is about an alien creature that spreads its infection to people and imitates them perfectly, killing off the real host an assuming control. If you think about it, this film came out around the same time as the Aids virus became apparent. With that said, it will make one wonder if Mr. Carpenter knew more than we did at the time. On top of all this, the suspense of the film builds from paranoia and takes it to the limit until the very end.
The Thing is not a great film. It does have flaws. When characters go off alone knowing what this creature can do to them, it makes them a little implausible and takes away some of the realism that Carpenter seemed to be pushing for. With that aside though I would recommend this to people who like to be scared, but if you have a weak stomach this is probably not for you. |
