John Carpenter's best film and most underrated

Too bad it was the right movie at the wrong time. This movie is finally getting recognition after 15 to 20 years of being labeled as "forgettable". This is, without a doubt, John Carpenter's best film. Everything was top choice quality. The actors did a very good job fleshing out their characters. However, sometimes they did seem to be acting a little bit campy at times. Still, they did a fantastic job. The story is really what makes this movie what it is, an underrated classic. Kudos to Bill Lancaster for writing one of the best sci-fi/horror screenplays to date. The direction was distinctly brutal and raw which was a shock to critics and audiences at the time. But, Carpenter stuck to his guns and made the film he wanted to make and he deserves a lot more credit than what was given at the time. The visuals (SFX) were the best at the time. Congrats to Rob Bottin, but that was the only thing recognized back in 1982. Because the visuals were so good and beautifully grotesque, everything else was overlooked. The visuals were the best and still work today and were very much worth an oscar nomination at least. However, in a sense, the SFX were the best and the worst thing going for this movie and the story in 1982. It was like a good, delicious, nutritious candy bar in a fancy looking wrapper and the wrapper was so pretty and sassy, nobody bothered to open it. (Not even the critics- Now that's a fancy wrapper!)
