great direction

This movie leaves you feeling depressed but it is absolutely captivating...Pollack's direction, especially during the derby scenes, entirely captures the desperation of the Depression era. Gloria's suicide scene, intermingled with shots of Gloria falling in a field, (hinting at the horse metaphor) is also very powerful.
