Normally, I really don't like independent films, because the scripts suck, and Scorcese has directed some bad scripts.

This is undoubtedly a "character film", but I've always HATED that term. Character film? Oh really? You mean it's about a character? That's a good start.

What sets Taxi Driver apart is the script. Although Travis is seriously loco from the war and sleep deprivation and all that, we envy him for his drive to single-handedly clean up the filthy streets of New York.

A pretty good script (to much pointless dialogue and "guns are cool" assumption) needs an incredible actor to make this memorable of a movie, and Robert DeNiro steps up to that task. He puts himself high in the running for best sick and twisted psychopath performance of all time.

Artsy director that he is, Scorcese's maverick techniques are relevant in this one, the characters are all somewhat likeable and the ending is very satisfying, unlike Mean Streets.

Bottom line: Robert DeNiro is top ten actor of all time because of this alone.
