Out of the hundreds of people who helped make SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE be the excellent piece of work it was, 2 stood out in my mind as being crucial to putting the film over the top: Christopher Reeve and John Williams.

Simply put, no other actor has perfectly embodied, not one character, but TWO in a comic book movie. Reeve was completely beliveable as "mild-mannered" and socially challenged Clark Kent, while soaring as his alterego, Kal-el, a.k.a. Superman. Michael Keeton, Tobey McGuire and Hugh Jackman in my opinion all did very well in their respective comic book roles (Batman, Spiderman and Wolverine, respectively) but he was still way above and beyond their performances.....so much so that almost 30 years later it will STILL be virtually impossible to see anyone else truly be Superman.

John Williams. A name that every avid moviegoer should know, and probably does. From Star Wars to Indiana Jones to E.T., this composer has written the most memorable and completely moving pieces ever. And he didn't stop in the 70's and 80's, because later he composed hits such as Home Alone, Stepmom, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Jurassic Park, and the Harry Potter trilogy...not to mention the latest Star Wars installments. But quite possibly his best work was done on Superman. This melodic film had various tones and pitches along the way, and Williams more than matched that with his traditional wit and imagination by keeping it light and humorous when called for, touching and moving as the drama developed, and wrapping it all together with a completely rousing and unforgettable theme. As with E.T. and Star Wars, this movie would not be the same without this perfect score.

The next Superman film to come has A LOT to live up to, as the world over millions upon millions of us treasure this amazing film. Hopefully the minds behind the upcoming revival have been as inspired as we all have by this legacy and develop a new one that can live on just as this one has. Take care.
