If you've ever known the legacy of the Christopher Reeve film, "Superman", than you could almost pat yourself on the back for it. To be a part of something so powerful, and yet conventional is a special thing, especially when you've grown up with it, the way I did. You see it, love it, and accept it as the best Superhero film ever. It spawned three sequels, and a great fanbase. I know most fans have always overlooked the one DC character that got away. Supergirl, the original heroine from Argo City, had just as much a part in the history of cinema. The 1984 film, "Supergirl" was a spin-off of the Christopher Reeve films. It was a solid, archetypical adventure, with moral values, and a great production. What most people see when viewing it, is either the original American release, indeed, the wrong way to watch it. When viewed in a more entire state, this film can be the very journey it promised to be. It was graced with a terrific script by David O'Dell, wild direction by Jeannot Szwarc, an amazing score by Jerry Goldsmith, and one of the best casts ever, including Faye Dunaway, Helen Slater, Peter O'Toole, Peter Cook, Brenda vaccaro, Maureen Teefy, Hart Bochner, and Marc McClure, as Jimmy Olsen.
What most people will never know, is that the film is actually quite remarkable in it's construction. It was written in a praised fashion, and the comic-book direction certainly pre-dates the recent likes of 'spiderman' and 'the hulk'. What's more, Helen Slater has become a certain favorite of many genre fans, due to the lack of sequels, or perhaps because the film is so highly desired in recent days. The film had a strong leading lady, and diaboliqual villainess, a hard conflicting diversion, and a severely triumphant finale that leaves my heart racing every time I see it. I will only cover the basic plot as this: A young woman, cousin to Superman, journeys to Earth to recover a power that must remain in the premisis of her home in inner space. One problem....it has been sent to our planet, and is currently in the hands of a greedy, evil witch, who desires revenge and world domination. I don't know how else to conclude my rant. This film has so much heart and power to end them all. It doesn't matter that the script was not an air-tight action packed sci-fi kicker like the Superman script. Why should it be? Superman paved the way for this film, as well as many others to come. We should not expect it to copy, or be moulded exactly as the original 1978 classic. It's that simple. I guarentee that should one watch the film with an open heart, and an imagination of exploding inspiration, they would se the film as it is: a ray of light, shining down from above, heavenly perfection, and delight for all. This film has so much color and flavor, why even the American cut was bashed is not to my knowledge, but I loved it then. I wish others felt the same. The simple fact is this: The film "Supergirl" is so much more than anyone will ever know. It is a great masterpiece. It is the ultimate masterpiece in modern fantasy/adventure. |
