No, I am not spealong of those belonging to Bette Davis, but those beloning to Norma Desmond as she descends the stairs as Salome.
Such confusion and derision goes on in the viewer's mind and eyes as he o she atches this film. Is it supposed to be a rehashing of the life of its star, Gloria Swanson? Is it about someone else that that are not telling us? Who can tell. The life of Glora and Norma are so entwined vis a vis old film clips, old friends (real silent stars) playing cards and in the manner she holds herself, that we come arrive at the end so perplexed, only assured by the fact that it cannot be Ms. Swanson that the film is referencing as Gloria would never put a bullet or 2 in someone's back, nevertheless Bill Holden's. It is interesting to me that they had Holden play this part as he, and everyone else in this film, except perhaps Mr. DeMille, is dwarfed my Ms. Swanson's performance. Given I am wirting this 56 years after the fact, I can truly say that Ms. Swanson should have won the Oscar for this performance (if not for her encyclopedia of work)even though Judy Holliday was so damned god in 'Born Yesterday'!
This film is one of the great ones. Keep your eyes on Ms. Swanson (as if you had a choice) and listen to all the dialogue. It is mesmerizing and Ms. Swanson looks amazingly youthful given her years and, in my opinion, truly gives a performance that may be in the top 5 of female performances in American film! Watch her watching you!
