"A Streetcar named Desire" remains one of the best films ever made, and despite being made over 50 years ago still feels fresh to this day. The classic Tennesee Williams play is converted into an amazing movie with an amazing cast including Marlon Brando and Vivian Leigh.
Leigh gives the standout performance in this movie; her portrayal of Blanche Dubois is debatedly one of the best female performances in a movie of all time. Her character is presented as desperate, manipulative, and flawed, but at the same time invokes great sympathy among the viewer. Her Oscar was well deserved.
Marlon Brando is of couse also amazing as Stanley; this movie serves only as an appetizer for some of his roles in later movies. Kim Hunter is also outstanding as Blanche's sister, and she also deserved her Oscar.
The direction of this Movie by Kazan is some of the best ever done, and he effectively turns great play staging into a flowing movie. What a great job!
An amazing story, great acting, and great directing all account for a movie that is somewhere in my Top 10 of all time. |
