Marlon Brando's Best

This movie is easily Marlon Brando's best performance. The chauvantistic, testosterone-filled alpha male, Stanley Kowalski is, in my mind, Tennessee Williams' best character because although he's not rich or famous or powerful (if he were we could draw a scary comparison to Kobe Bryant's saga), males envy him and females love him. If Holden Caulfield is an anti-hero, then Stanley is an anti-tragic figure. And the (original) story itself is an anti-tragedy. Kowalski's arrogance and amoral behavior (tragic flaws) leads to....well, nothing bad.
As you watch the movie, be sure to consider that Stella does not leave Stanley in the original! Hollywood HATED this ending and if Tennessee Williams didn't have a Pulitzer, they wouldn't even have considered compromising like they did.
If you don't act, this movie is probably not for you. You'll be bored. If you do, you'll probably watch this at least once a year and think "how the hell does he do that so perfectly?" |
