A Classic Masterpiece!

I have long been trying to see the works of Akira Kurusawa but finds it extremely difficult to find one. Stray Dog was my first encounter with the works of The Master and I wasnt disappointed.
The film transcends the usual crime/detective yarn and becomes a masterful study of post war Japan. It is a classic film noir that goes beyond the cop and robber angle of a story and focuses more on the psychological connection between the protagonist and the criminal who stole his gun and used it to commit a series of robberies and murders.
The film is devoid of the usual gun fires and explosions, a common staple in modern cop-and-robber films. None of the flying techniques used in other Asian films. The action sequences here are raw and crude and far-in-between. This does not, however, dimished the power of the film. The camera works is excellent. A montage showing the slums of Tokyo and how the Japanese attempts to cope with the effects of war set against Mifune's quest for the gun dealer is truly masterful.
Stray Dog amply rewarded me with my curiosity of Kurusawa's works. I am highly recommending this film to those who hungers for truly great films. |
