This film is incredible. As others have mentioned in previous reviews, Spartacus is a movie about two human motivations- freedom and love. The desire of a slave gladiator to attain freedom from a life of bondage and servitude is conveyed strongly by Douglas (who plays the title role). So strongly, that it reminds me of how inate that desire is in me, in all of us. On the flip side, the love story between Spartacus and Verinia is quite tangible and very moving. A one-two punch combination that will surely stir emotion in the viewer.
The cast is great. All performances are note worthy. A particularly extraordinary performance is delivered by Peter Ustinov. My "good acting" senses were locked on Ustinov's performance even before I learned it earned him an oscar for best supporting actor. Bravo!
The visuals are stunning and could easy compete with those of "Gladiator" (R. Scott). In fact, the whole film compares (and even exceeds in some aspects)flavorably to "Gladiator".
Spartacus is a must see of the classic films. In my humble opinion it sets the standard for the epic genre. |
