Kubrick did not have final editing approval of Spartacus therefore exactly what would have been if he had will never be known. The film is a grand, splashy extravaganza, and a much more melodramatic presentation than usual for Stanley. Laughton and Olivier weren't necessarily the most restrained actors, although they do fine jobs. As always the cinematography and scene presentation are wonderful. However the usual Hollywood pomp and circumstance reduce Spartacus to just another big budget toga party, although much much better accomplished than most. |
