Gleason at his best

Though many who praise Gleason for his role in the Honeymooners or for his theater work such as Macbeth might disagree, I fully believe that here, in his 60s as a southern racist enraged sheriff, he was at his best. He played the part brilliantly and many "serious" TV and cinema critics have actually denounced him for this role. He was essential to the movie and clearly knew what he was doing. As much as I loved Reynolds, Reed, and Sally Field in their respected roles, Gleason, the smokey, carried this flick all the way and gave every Bandit-wannabe a distinct and admirable opponent. May Jackie rest in peace.
Also: I heard a 78 year-old Alfred Hitchcock said this was one of the best movies of all time when first released in 1977. |
