It's an old saying, but it's true. There is nothing like one of the old movie versions of the great musicals. The great old stars who are almost across the board good actors play the roles wholeheartedly, never letting anything slide. Now, I hate to say this, but they are really truly talented. Not saying that there aren't any really truly talented people in Hollywood right now, but how many stars do you know that sing, dance, and act, or at least give their best effort; no stand-ins or anything. Alright, I'll get off my rant and into the movie.
The story is original, though the love story is typical. The songs aren't random, but make sense as a part of the plot. The acting I have already commented on, and it holds true though this movie.
One thing that I think is much missed in movies today is the way every shot must switch angles a million times a scene. Singin' in the Rain has many dance numbers that are done almost continuously, with very few switches, and regular scenes are the same way. It says something about the actors that they are able to keep going all that time.
In short, it's a wonderful, timeless classic with characters everyone can relate to, even if the story can be slightly predictable.
