What a glorious feeling!

I'm happy again! Gene Kelly's best work without dispute. His dancing! Though his character is sadly under-written, Donald O'Connor manages to go through the downpour and stay warm and dry. Debbie Reynolds is charming, but Kelly's dancing is entrancing. Yes, OK. I once wanted to be a dancer; I even took ballet and jazz classes, so I know when there is a dancer I like, and I like Gene Kelly. A lot! I know the film's almost every word and lyric by heart. I always laugh out loud with the "Yes, yes, yes. No, no, no" scene. I jump up and start shuffling along with Gene and Cyd Charise. Jean Hagen is terrific. Together with Kelly and O'Connor the three SHOULD have been awarded an Oscar. The screenplay is a peach. The color is deep and sharp, the sets and costumes so correct, the direction precise and, oh, the dancing, the singing, the laughing... let it pour! |
