Simply one of the greatest movies of all time. I've seen it numerous times and one day decided to try watching "The Magnificent Seven" after seeing "Seven Samurai". I'd always loved the western, but I couldn't watch it right after viewing Kurosawa's masterpiece - the western was too pale, too banal in comparison. Kurosawa's visuals are stunning, as usual, and capture the creeping sense of desperation felt by the heroes as they recognize their increasingly marginal role in Japanese society. The fight scenes are great and the characters vividly reflect their approaches to their respective disciplines. The triangulation of the bandits, the samurai, and the villagers is handled with absolute precision, thematically and cinematically. With all the cultural content, the movie ultimately works as a compassionate study of a bunch of people living on the edge of survival. And it's damned exciting as well. One of the great masterpieces of film. |
