The Oscars Aren't Worthy

Oscar-worthy is a hilarious adjective for this film, seeing as how the MPAA isn't worthy of licking Kurosawa's boots. But anyway...
Just so you know, The Magnificent Seven was a re-make of this film, but if you have seen that and missed the original then you are robbing yourself of one of the best films ever made. If you like westerns, Kurosawa and other Japanese directors did also, seeing a comparison to our gunslingers in their ronin samurai. Other Kurosawa films were re-made into Eastwood westers (*shudder*).
Seven Samurai is a long film and I wish it was longer. I never want to part with these characters. Most great films have one thing in common: fabulous supporting casts. Main characters are wonderful, but there is something about that combination of personalities that makes it a movie you can love no matter what mood you are in!
Many people go on and on about Mifune, but to be honest Takashi Shimura is my favorite stock Kurosawa actor ever. He is so suble (unlike Mifune) and sweet and noble and gentle and strong. Kambei is the greatest father figure ever to grace the screen. I mourn Shimura's passing.
If you really love this film get the Criterion DVD and watch the commentary by Mike Jeck, it's not bad. If you love this movie, start watching all the Kurosawa movies, you can't go wrong! |
